What Former JUCO Athletes and Coaches Want Canadian Players to Know

“As a coach at the JUCO level, I've seen this path change lives. Players from everywhere including the US, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, guys who weren't heavily recruited out of high school came through junior college programs and went on to Power 4 schools, with some even going on to be drafted in the NFL as first-rounders. For Canadian athletes, don't let the unfamiliarity of JUCO hold you back. The competition is real, the coaching is serious, and the exposure can open doors that didn't exist before. The players who come in hungry and coachable, regardless of where they're from, are the ones who make it. JUCO can be one of the smartest steps forward to reach your dreams.”

“Attending an American JUCO as a Canadian cheerleader was a life-changing experience. It gave me the opportunity to train with some of the best cheerleaders in the world and be coached by some of the most renowned coaches in the industry. I have built many friendships and connections with people from various countries, making this a truly unique experience. Being part of such a successful and elite program has helped me grow tremendously, not only as an athlete but as a person as well.”

“Navarro has opened so many doors for me and taught me things I will carry with me throughout my life. During my time at JUCO, I achieved success at the NCA College Nationals in Daytona, as well as winning the NJCAA Championship for the first time in Navarro's history. These accomplishments, along with simply attending a JUCO, are great assets for future opportunities such as a 4-year university. It has been an amazing experience, and I am very grateful for my time in the U.S. at Navarro College.”

“As a Canadian player, JUCO made my NCAA dream come true. This experience pushed me to grow not just as an athlete, but as a person. Through the grind and the competition, I earned All-American honors at the JUCO level, something I once only dreamed of. Now, heading into my final year competing in the NCAA, I'm living proof that this path works. JUCO didn't just open doors, it prepared me to walk through them and succeed at the next level.”

“Coming from Trois-Rivières, Quebec, I had the opportunity to play Division 1 baseball at McCook Community College in Nebraska. As a French-speaking Canadian, living and competing in the U.S. really helped me improve my English and adapt to a new level of baseball while learning to live on my own in another country.”

“The JUCO pathway also taught me discipline on and off the field, which continues to benefit me today. I highly recommend this path to Canadian athletes who want to combine academics and baseball and take their game to the next level in the U.S.”

“Playing football at Laney College helped me grow both on and off the field. JUCO is really a gateway for players. It gave me a second chance to develop, gain exposure, and build connections with coaches. I had teammates from places like Alaska and the UK who used this path to reach NCAA Division I, and it can be the same for Canadian athletes if they're willing to work and stay focused.”

“Going JUCO is betting on yourself while setting you up to be a successful individual. For Canadian student-athletes, this is a great step toward a 4-year NCAA school while finding a balance between athletics and academics. From coaches to players, everyone wants to get to the next level. The school and sports programs are geared to get you to the next level and set you up for success. You will always have your JUCO school behind you, supporting you.”

“Going JUCO can be a life-changing experience for Canadian athletes, no matter the sport. You get an opportunity to meet people from all different backgrounds, including the U.S and Europe, and they become some of the best friends you will have in your life. On top of that, JUCO opens the door to a scholarship at a 4-year NCAA school. All in all, JUCO is a great experience that will set you up for success in your sport but also in life.”

“I've had the pleasure of coaching at the JUCO level for two years, and I can say the JUCO path is full of opportunities. No matter your circumstances, JUCO provides a viable option to pursue your goals of earning a spot on a four-year college roster or even a professional contract.”

“Some of the best athletes I've ever coached got their start at a junior college, but JUCO is not for the faint of heart. Be prepared to compete every single day against some of the toughest athletes in the game. If you can succeed at the JUCO level, you'll be well equipped to handle the challenges that await at the next level.”

“As an NCAA Division II Coach at Adelphi University, I have seen many players begin their career playing at a JUCO before finding a landing spot at a Division I, II, or III school. It's impossible for every basketball player in the world to be appropriately evaluated, so the JUCO route can be a great route for players to gain exposure, especially players coming from other countries like Canada. JUCO is a fantastic option for athletes wanting to continue playing basketball at the next level in the U.S.”

“I was recruited to play D-1 soccer, D-2 basketball, and a few JUCOs offered me a tennis scholarship. I decided to play basketball and soon found out that about one-third of the team had transferred from JUCOs. It wasn't that they weren't good enough — in fact, they were excellent. JUCOs offer athletes, including Canadian players, a chance to get noticed, a place to raise their GPA, and an opportunity to complete core classes. The level of play is high, and you get to know your professors. JUCOs definitely give athletes a place to better themselves and their craft.”
